Yesterday afternoon I looked out back to see a gigantic tree laying across our fence. I went out and assessed the damage. 5 fence rails broken, tree completely uprooted, lotta diseased tree in my yard. Some might see this and react like my neighbor did (the tree stands/stood on his property). He called a tree surgeon who said he would be out Monday, then he came over to let us know that he knew and had made arrangements to have it taken care of.
When he came over, my wife answered the door
and explained that I had been looking for a reason to get a new chainsaw and had already left to get it
. My old chainsaw I “borrowed” from my parents. It’s a small, shitty, “Homelite” branded thing that only gets fuel when you hold it at a certain
angle...
real
safe for a chainsaw...
Given the times, I online ordered an Echo CS 400 chainshaw, chain oil, and 5 fence rails from the local home depot. I have an Echo backpack blower, and weed whacker, they have both been absolute gems so I’m sticking with em.
As I got out of the car I donned my mask and gloves. Picked up my stuff, and disinfected it before I brought it in...If you told me a month ago that I would be doing all of that extra stuff just for a trip to the Depot, I would have been like, “Ok, crackhead”
Anyway, I have never had the pleasure of using a decent chainsaw before. I am an excitable person, and my neighbors know it so families on both sides were out to see me in action . In addition I love new toys/tools. As I open the box:

The Neighbors:
Filled the chain oil , filled the gas tank , primed, choke, and it fired right up. Do you even know if a chainsaw works if you don’t rev it up like a psycho first?
Anyway, In just a few hours this tree is gone! I will put up pics later but man is there anything like cutting something as big as a tree with relative ease?

I love my ECHO, after I modded it up a little. First take the limiter bumps off of the adjustment screws so you can get some fuel in there, and then take a 1" saw to the catalyst. Then it really acts like a class bigger saw
Of course re-tune if you take the catalyst out

Now juggle them and post the video.

Interesting! How do you re-tune a chainsaw? Just set the carb back to default and feel it out?

I have an echo blower, awesome tool. I am dying for a chainsaw but i am too scared to pull the trigger.

I love Echo tools. I have an Echo weedeater that’s been going strong with minimal maintenance for 19 years.

Chainsaws are fun. I sold Stihl saws at my high school and college jobs and part of that sale process is firing up the saw before sending it out. I was always excited to sell a big saw. I think the biggest one I ever sold was the MS880, (122cc) with a 36" bar. What a beast.

This is a good basis
ECHOs have a rev limiting coil, so it won’t over-rev, so what you have to do is go way past where it maxes out, til the revs start dropping, and then split the difference between the plateau where it’s at max revs

Since we moved into our current house and it has a wood burning fireplace, I did the manly thing and bought wood from the local grocery store. Turns out that’s expensive as hell. Then I thought, I have a flannel shirt and a beard on occasion , I need a chainsaw and an axe.
I got the E-Go from Home Depot. It is surprisingly good. I wouldn’t try to heat a hous e using it but for a fireplace and stuff around the house, it’s perfect.

I just cut a tree in my yard. When it gets down without destroying your neighbors mailbox it’s all good. Had a few fire pit nights to burn out all the small sticks. Then got this idea off the internet: 2 cinder blocks, 2 - 2x4x10’ treated lumber cut in half...

A neighbor threw away an Echo edger. It was made in 1995 ! I rebuilt the carb, cleaned it up, bought the trimmer shaft that goes on the engine, and the edger head is the same as the trimmer head. Never gave me any trouble in the last 7 years.

I wander my property looking for trees to cut down, it’s that emasculating for me.

This makes me happy. I have a circa 1970 Jonsereds that my father gave me when he bought a newer Stihl, probably 12 years ago. I keep it in very good order but it just generally always works. I’ve been cutting some trees on my land lately, it’s an annual necessity to maintain our view. I probably have to cut 30-40 trees every year just to keep status quo. There’s a lot to dropping a tree in just the right spot, when you’re working around other trees and/or other obstacles. I’m very good at it, and still make mistakes from time to time. But my safety record is impeccable.
I should make a whole post about my saw after seeing the enthusiasm on this one lol

I just picked up another Echo engine module that my neighbor put out by the curb. It’s clear from the condition that it hasn’t been properly maintained. When I find some time, I’m going to clean it up and see if I can get it running. It has to be at least 10 years newer than mine!

I’m clearing my land to build a 1500 sq ft shop and 2400 sq ft house. I have a Husqvarna 20" and 16" chainsaw , a 17' long pole saw (attachment that runs on my Husqvarna weedwhacker), and a DeWalt 12" battery powered chain saw. I also have a 16.5 hp DR brushmower, a gas powered chipper, and a Champion 25 ton log splitter. I’ve g ot enough firewood for the rest of my natural life

I’ve filled up around a third of my DVR with HIM episodes since Science is running marathons almost daily since the Coronapocalypse started.

I would recommend chainsaw gear, you really don’t want to be i a hospital right now.

Got it all. Minus that helmet contraption. I have a hard hat and I wear goggles, but no face shield or ear protection.

Batteries are super pricey for E-Go stuff. It is a better option to buy a second piece of equipment to get another battery. I bought the mower first, really liked it. Then when a chainsaw was needed, I thought about going without the battery and using the one from the mower only. Two batteries is definitely the way to go. It takes two batteries to fill up my Taco with wood. The oil tank is sized to go through about 60-75% of its capacity for the 5.0 AH battery. It’s hard to tell, but it’s three rows deep and for most of them there wasn’t much extra length for the 16" bar.

I use the Snow Joe /Sun Joe equipment, and that’s the way I went. Chainsaw - battery. Tiller - battery. Snow blower - 2 batteries!
Now I can cut down zombies trees to my heart’s content, and also manage to clear my driveway in the Winter without a 4 hour pause in the middle.
